2019 Woodmonster Race Results

Dear 2019 Woodmonster runners,

Co-race directors, Susan Colborn and myself, Christine Chapon, want to congratulate and thank you for your participation in this year’s unique version of the last race of the LMJS Triple Crown.

We hope you enjoyed the alternate route of the 2019 Woodmonster! Next year, barring no trail closures, the full Woodmonster climb will be back.

When I found out on my birthday that we had to rethink the course, my first reaction was “dang what a great gift”! But indeed it was a gift !t forced me to explore new routes, and consult with several of my running friends. I would like to thank Diane Ambrose , Jeanine Holmlund , Nancy Philippine, Susan Colborn, Rick Rosenbaum, Joe Schieffer, Adam Ray, Brian Black, John Spriggs, Jerry Flanagan and Randall Conner for their sound advice. My number one goal was to keep as much of the spirit of the Woodmonster as possible!

Should I mention that the closed trails reopened the day before the race? Could not risk to disappoint you all!

On June 23^rd, we had 234 runners, a record number thanks to the East Bay Regional Park Department who allowed us to accept up to 250 entries. 250 is a great target for our family and community oriented race. We like to think that it gives the opportunity to all participants to meet new fellow runners and enjoy their time on the trails without feeling overcrowded. Many thanks to so many of you who return year after year to tackle the Oakland Hills!

It takes a bit of work to recruit participants and I would like to thank all our friends who helped us promote the race starting with the Bay area running clubs: Pamakids (Paul Barnes), Tamalpa (David Leipsic) Excelsiors (Cliff Lentz), That’s Fine Track Club ( Samuel Robinson), RUN 365 , Running for a Better Oakland. A special shout out to the queen of social media, Sarah Dever from Transports who helped us promote Woodmonster and the East Bay Triple Crown on a weekly basis for the past few months! If you are not familiar with Transports, our top sponsor for this race, I encourage you to go visit their stores on College in Oakland and on Solano in Berkeley. Great service and an amazing selection of shoes and accessories for all runners! Many thanks to all of you who brought your friends! Last but not least we received great support from Lake Merritt Joggers and Striders(LMJS), our own running club and many of its members.

Now, here comes the much expected Woodmonster RESULTS!!! ( link has been posted on LMJS website after the race) https://www.fordtiming.us/results

Our overall winner was returning champ Bradford Bryon( actual time, 1:12:47 ) from Tamalpa, followed by Cliff Lentz( actual time 1:06:46 ) from Excelsiors and Samuel Robinson who also clicked the fastest time (59.15 ).

Verity Breen from Tamalpa, 4^thoverall and a short 31sec behind Sam, led the ladies with force and spirits as always, (1:23:54). Our second lady was outstanding 15 year old El Camino High school athlete, Noelle Diep ( 1:19:10) and our third lady was our long time Woodmonster friend from Pamakids, Anne Mason (1:30.10).

If you missed the age group awards ceremony, our youngest runners were, East Bay Triple Crown survivors, Ruby and Nikita Gorelick (respectively 7 and 9 year old) who ran with their parents not only Woodmonster but also Tilden Tough Ten and Lake Chabot trail challenge half-marathon. Watch out for those two young athletes in the years to come! Our most senior runner was Dan Boone ( 78 year old) . Quite an inspiration!

July's Fourth Sunday Run Cancelled!

Our Fourth Sunday Run on July 24, 2016 has been cancelled due to the schedule overlap with the SW Masters Regional Regatta at Lake Merritt.

We were unaware of the large-scale event being hosted by the Lake Merritt Rowing Club on the same day until recently and with the expected crowds, parking, and other logistics, many safety concerns for our runners were raised.

We apologize for this late notice. An email will follow to all members and runners that have already pre-registered. Thank you, LMJS Board

The buffet menu will feature house salad, lemon herb whitefish, mushroom gravy chicken breast, corn poblano lasagna, garlic mashed potatoes, & vegetables. Thanks to Dave Nicely we have our Total Time standings for 2015 -- there is still time to get in on this and compete by doing a 5K, a 10K and a 15K during the remaining 4th Sunday Runs (4SR). It took us a while to work out our new system so thanks to Dave and to Sarah Vital our main timekeeper for their persistence and excellence!

Fall Beginning Running Program to start Oct 31

LMJS will be offering a beginning running program this fall to help you get in shape for a 5K, which is 3.1 miles! This program is designed for those who want to work up to a 5K and those who haven't run for awhile and want to begin again.

These training sessions will be held for five consecutive Saturdays at 10:00am with a 5K race the sixth week and will involve a $30 fee for LMJS member or $35 for non-members. Our runs will sample a few of the gorgeous East Bay area trails. The first will be held Saturday, October 31st at 10:00 am culminating with the Dam Jingle Bell Dash, a lively 5K race at San Pablo Reservoir to be held on Saturday, December 5th (race fee extra).

Summer LMJS Picnic and Barbecue, August 1

The Summer LMJS Picnic, Barbecue, and Board Elections will be held Saturday, August 1 at Larkey Park, Walnut Creek.

Location: Larkey Park, corner of Buena Vista Ave and First Ave, Walnut Creek
Time: 8:30 to run, 10am-12pm potluck/picnic
Who: LMJS and friends

We'll fire up the grills for this - hamburgers, veggies burgers and the fixings are on the club! We'll hold a run before the picnic to work up appetites. Please feel free to attend the run or the picnic, or both for maximum fun. Larkey Park is a terrific place for children of all ages.

The Lindsay Wildlife Museum (on the grounds of Larkey Park) will be open that day from 10-5.

The Larkey Swim Center will be open from 12-5.

Beginning Running Class, starts May 2nd

LMJS will be offering another beginning running program this spring to help you get in shape for a 5K! This program is designed for those who want to work up to a 5K which is 3.1 miles.

These training sessions will be held for five consecutive Saturdays at 10:00am with a 5K race the fifth week and will involve a $30 fee for LMJS member or $35 for non-members. Our runs will sample a few of the gorgeous East Bay area trails. The first will be held Saturday, May 2nd at 10:00 am culminating with a lovely 5K race at Pt Pinole to be held on Saturday, May 30th (race fee extra).

We'll cover topics such as running shoes, running form, safety, injury prevention and hydration and nutrition along the way. We'll provide training schedules, maps, and lots of encouragement. You'll need to come ready to run every Saturday with a water bottle and towel for the end.

This training is appropriate for anyone who wants to work up to a 5K and for those who haven't run for awhile and want to begin again. RSVP required for this program, with a minimum of 6 and a maximum of 30 participants, to keep things manageable.

The day after a good rain is always beautiful, and today was no exception. All 120 finishers of the October 2014 Fourth Sunday Race can attest to that! Please remember, there is no Fourth Sunday Run at Lake Merritt in June. The change this year is to accomodate a change in date for the 49th Annual Dick Houston Memorial Woodminster Cross Country Race.

Fourth Sunday runs-- 5K, 10K, and 15K, will return as normal in July. Pre-registration is open for that run.

The beautiful holiday weekend brought out a bunch of happy runners, from the Bay Area and beyond (hello Florida and Ohio visitors!).

A few youngsters are missing from the results posted (bibs numbered 85, 87, 89, 91). If you are that runner or that runners parent, could you drop me a line and fill me in on name/age/gender info. Tilden Tough Ten preliminary results

What a beautiful day for a tough run. I hope everyone had a good, fun race. The initial preliminary results are attached here: PRELIMINARY TTT2014 results

Please direct any errors to me at schtimpy27@gmail.com by this Friday, May 23. After we are sure the results are accurate, the will be posted to the final race database next week.

Because of a park emergency, we needed to move the chip reader for a few minutes so the park ranger's truck could pass. So a busy potion of the race was manually timed using the timing software. Finishers during that time have reconciled very accurately with the back-up timing. However, you may notice a few seconds here or there (specifically, if I had trouble reading your bib number, it took an extra second or two to enter your number to record your time). If you notice something WAY out of whack, please let me know and I'll go back into the manual back-up to troubleshoot.

Additionally, there are 3 runners who have no finish time on either system. If that's you and you did finish, please let me know (an estimated finish time will help as I go back into the third back-up system).

A record fell today. And it fell hard! Congratulations to Justin Marpole-Bird, who is the new record holder for fastest 4SR 10K with a time of 30:51, beating the previous record by 1 minute and 35 seconds. Wow!!

A hearty congratulations to all 182 finishers who helped make this the largest Fourth Sunday Race on record!

Of all races, it sure was bad luck for the timing system to have a power meltdown on this big one. But thankfully, we always have TWO sets of back up just in case this happens. This was the first time since adopting chip timing that we've needed to rely exclusively on manual back-up. Huge thanks to Vivek and Erasmo who never missed a beat as they became prime timers instead of backup!

Attached here are the results from the first back-up system: July 2013 4SR first preliminary results

The data is a bit rough (I haven't spell checked yet), and I'm still going to refer back to the second back-up system to clarify some times. If you notice anything glaringly wrong with what you have as your own self timed time, please let me know, as it can narrow the window of error.

IT'S NEVER TOO LATE TO JOIN THE RACING TEAM!

There are currently 2 Road Races remaining for this year: California International Marathon and the X-mas Relays. Our Women's team will have 8 woman running the marathon and we hope to have many more running in the relays. To view the road race series, click here. Though the 2011 schedule has not been updated yet, it will probably look very similar to 2010.

SOME BACKGROUND INFO: The Pacific Association sponsors individual and team competition through its Grand Prix race series in road racing, ultra racing and cross country. The road series consists of ten to twelve road races spread around Northern California throughout the year. The races range in length from 1 mile to the marathon and with point totals being kept over the race series for both individuals and teams. The purpose of fielding teams in this competition is not so much about winning, but trying your best, promoting camaraderie, and getting perhaps a little outside your comfort zone by running against the best runners in Northern California. To compete for the club, you must join the Pacific Association USA Track and Field (PAUSATF) for $30 per year. The club is supporting the team in several ways, one of which is if you run in three races during the year, LMJS will reimburse you for the cost of the team singlet. All ability levels are welcome at any time. The more, the merrier!

Men's Racing Team - Call for Members

Why should the ladies have all the fun? LMJS now has a women's racing team who are participating in USATF events. They raced in the Zippy 5K and the Marin Memorial Day race. So, of course, some of the men are wondering, "What about a men's team?" Jim Eckford would like to get the ball rolling by finding out who is interested.
